I followed your lead with great interest, having admired the garden at The Grove via the wonderful books by David Hicks. One thing though, the tower was a birthday gift from Pamela to David and not to himself. I loved this post, you're on to wonderful stuff here.

Paul, you are absolutely correct! Ashley told us that one year his mother had given David something wonderful for his birthday - maybe a cigarette case? - and David said that if she really wanted to please him, she should let him choose his own presents in the future. So the pavilion was indeed given to him by her, but by his own suggestion and his own design... while trying to be succinct, I'm afraid it all got fuzzed... many thanks for letting me clarify!

While I generally prefer the earlier decoration of The Grove, the garden appears better than ever.

I will reference you (refer to you in English, I suppose) in a post soon about the fastidious behaviour of Mr Hicks. I think I have the same disease. Nay, isn't is a requirement?
